Maison & Objet – 2009 Trend Forecast

The International home decoration, giftware and tableware exhibition is held twice a year in Paris.  It’s a place where you can do an analysis of the current climate, discover new designers, forecast exhibitions and concept activities.

As I was browsing the trends for 2009, I noticed there was a huge yellow and purple trend and it got me to thinking. . . interesting that in 2008, Pantone’s colour of the year was the Blue Iris (which is a purply blue) and now the colour for 2009 is Mimosa, an orangy yellow.   Then you put the two complements together and you have wonderful bedding, tableware, and fabrics that work together.  Was that just a coincidence or what?

Here are my favourites from the slideshow:

TREND: Mustard and Plum Palette

When it comes to fanciful dinnerware Porzellanmaufakur Reichenbach manages to combine the playful with the sublime. On these pistachio green serving plates edged in gold 3-d pincher bugs double as decoration and a clever handle. They stack beautifully with purple dinner plates and serving bowls.

TREND: Mustard and Plum Palette

Paisley may seem classic but this updated color combination seen at Bagnaresi Casa is fashion-forward and distinct. In this regal pattern, purple and yellow find their earthier hues.

My sister Anita will be very happy to see this because it means the living room I decorated for her 3 years ago is totally current!

TREND: Mustard and Plum Palette

These dark plum pillows by L'Opificio can be made to measure and customized in special color combinations and fabrics. Luxurious and refined these Italian beauties come in linen, velvet, silk, and brocade.

TREND: Mustard and Plum Palette

Nature shines through in this buttery yellow cotton bedding from Blanc Des Vosges. Based on vintage gardening catalogues, this botanical toile features lilies, peonies, and roses in light shades of lavender and gray.

redorangestone-lamps.jpg

TREND: Red and Orange Palette

Francois Chatain expands the boundaries of nature + style with these unique lamps. Artful rock piles in gorgeous lacquer glazes make a striking base below these Zen infused shades. Available in multiple colors, but red and orange leads Chatain’s collection.

Have you noticed the ‘stones piled on top of each other trend’  I’ve been seeing them everywhere, except here they are painted!

TREND: Red and Orange Palette

Vegetable colors are still in, especially when accented with taupe and charcoal neutrals. The folkloric patterns of the Bontemps Collection are inspired by the bold colorations and festive accessories in dowry embroideries.

HONORABLE MENTION: SCE's Table Lamps

Attractive red-and-white table lamps from SCE possess the hour glass shapes that are about to dominate both the runway and the home. Next season, watch out for winning proportions and balance in vases, accessories and lighting.

TREND: Caravan

The Bontemps Collection’s hand-embroidered designs are layered on top of a stripe for a new take on homemade and eastern flair.

xroads-canisters.jpg

TREND: Caravan

A revival of interest in eastern European folk art has generated a wealth of new products at Asia Tides, including these graphic tea canisters in bold concentric vine patterns.

TREND: Caravan   At Becara, suzani patterns inspired by handcrafted coverlets from Uzbekistan are bursting into the limelight. Not for the pattern-shy, their upholstery on fabrics, rugs and pillows bring ethnic punch to home décor.

outdoor-honorable-chair.jpg

TREND:  Outdoor Chic

This Patricia Urquiola outdoor “Crinoline” chair for B&B Italia in polyethylene synthetic fibers features coiled flower bursts on an updated wing chair frame.  A simple base in black or bronze cord doubles as a storage nook for pool accessories.

I just loved this chair, doesn’t look very comfortable to lounge in but two of these poolside would look amazing!

honorable-fire-pit.jpg

HONORABLE MENTION: Ora-ito Firepit

The organic form of the typically clunky fire pit gives Ora-ito’s design a dramatic flare. Not only progressive in look but in energy and versatility, this sculptural stone lights with bio fuel and can be used indoors or out

I loved this simple, organic looking, yet contemporary fire-pit and how great that it can be used indoors as well!
