I love Kate’s blog and especially her sense of humour!  I laugh and giggle all through her posts, and she is a really talented designer! This is her family room re-vamp below:

On an on-line consultation yesterday with a lovely client on an island in BC somewhere, we were talking about her nautical themed guestrooms (it’s no wonder her guests never want to leave). Pictures to come but my client has lots of painting to do.  Anyway, back to my point.  If you want all the rooms in your house to look good, you will at some point have to paint something other than walls because either white or a colour will be required to really make the room pop or connect furniture that otherwise look odd together!  And Kate shows you how on her blog! Here’s a link to her personal projects, they are so fun to go through!

Artist Love

I don't claim to know a lot about art. But I do know what I like! And to me that is all that matters when it comes to purchasing art....you have to love it, be moved by it and/or leave the gallery or shop dreaming about it. Through all my blog reading, I have come across some amazing artists (I love) lately and wanted to share these talents with you.

Twenty Six in her Ocean Moods Collection

Sunset 10

White Cottage With Orange Door

Four Seasons: Winter

And while talking about art, I wanted to mention The Charleston Artist Collective, a website for local artists that want to showcase their work outside of the conventional gallery setting. Each month, the site features artist's interpretations of a new theme and a percentage of the sales goes back towards the community. Go check it out!

Does Home Decor follow Fashion?

I was just asked this question by a reporter. I think it definitely follows fashion although slower because home decor items are more expensive and aren’t replaced as quickly as clothing. Then I was on The Sartorialist today and saw these images from a Jil Sander fashion show. Apparently several of the editors thought it was the best show (so far) of the season.

The colour blocking is fabulous, I love it!

Now this is a fun laundry room/office. I have also seen a laundry room done in cherry red appliances, a fake grass (some kind of laminate but it looked like real grass) floor and sky blue walls, it was fabulous!

image

These bright colours are few and far between in designer fabrics right now though. Cannot find Kelly green at all even though it’s all over the magazines and my sunflower yellow sofa colour is impossible as well. Sigh. It’s a tough life to be so forward thinking :)

When I arrived on the site the second time to get the images for this post I saw this ad on the sidebar.

image Don't these coloured tights remind you of the 80’s? (Well you have to be 40 to get it I guess) Wow!

I’ll be in Seattle this weekend for my fall shopping trip, I can hardly wait!

Should There Be Kindness In the World of Design?

Preston Bailey, a fabulous event planner/designer, (in my humble opinion), wrote this recent post on his blog:  “Common Mistakes – Being Too Concerned About What Others Think”  I love to read Preston’s posts as they are written with the wisdom of having many years of business experience, in a creative field, as well as I believe they truly come from the heart.  (He writes his own posts rather than assign them to someone else.)  Preston was spot on with his conclusions and if you are a professional in the field of interior design, or even a consumer looking to hire a designer, this is a great read.  It brings forth the question - “Should there be kindness in the world of design?”

Preston-Blogging

(Here’s Preston creating one of his own blog posts.  I enjoy his combination of elegance and humility.  He honors his past, while looking towards the future.)

I appreciate constructive comments as they are good for dialogue and help non-designers understand more about the process and world of interior design.  I appreciate them when they come from a trusted peer or advisor.  (Those of whom I admire their degree of expertise and their integrity.  I know the comments will be honest but with good intention.)  I often ask those special people for their advice and objective opinions, even though I know the world of design and art can be very subjective.  Ultimately, my “design judge” will be the client or the potential clients who might be looking for my services.

yhst-57587333958251_2125_17289593

(An interior designer’s portfolio.  It’s more than a stack of photos.  It’s our body of work and the heart and soul of our clients’ projects.)

If a third-party posts portfolio photos online, it should be done with respect and admiration for that designer’s work.   If an individual, be it the designer or the homeowner, is not made aware their work is being put out for public critique, (as being solicited on some social media sites), it opens up an opportunity for a misunderstanding as to the intent of the post, especially if placed in a position of which the topic regards ill humor or snarky comments.  In some cases, not only are comments being made about the designer's work, the poster may also be commenting on a design client’s personal residence.  Professionals should understand the concept of restraint and good taste in all areas of design, even with their words.  I think most consumers would choose talent, professionalism, class, and kindness.  (At least, that's the kind of client with whom I enjoy working the most.)

snowflake

(Thank goodness for diversity!  Otherwise snowflakes could be awfully boring.)

We have to remember that opinions are just what they are.  The intention is what sets them apart.  What is the gain for the other party?  Does it build them up or support them?  If not, I remember what my southern mother has always shared with me - "When in doubt, don't do it" and the old adage about, "If you don't have anything kind to say . . . ."  Finally, the Golden Rule works very well, too.  I often wonder, given the face-to-face opportunity with the interior designer and their clients, if some of the comments I've seen made on those media outlets would be openly shared?

I think the beauty of interior design is not only in applying its functional aspect; it’s the personal expression for the client.  We, the designers, offer our professional guidance.  The final signature of approval comes from the client.

Thanks for letting me share my musings, today.  I appreciate your time!

With kindest regards,

Wanda

Homely Creature Comforts - Rugs

Brrr.... the weather has turned a turn for the worst and with summer already feeling like a distant memory in many parts of the UK we brace ourselves for the onset of autumn, gales and flooding.

However, it's not all doom and gloom! This is the time of the year to looking to creature comforts as we get ready to bunker down in front of the fire.

I Am FLORed!

I am LOVING this rug from FLOR!!!
Individual carpet tiles that work in many ways...

Spill on one tile, it can be easily replaced. Great if you have kids! (Or if you are clumsy.)

Have you been watching the NATE show? Apparently he invited a bunch of design bloggers to a taping. Clearly, my invite got lost in the mail! But from the sound of it I am glad that I missed it. Read what happened here. I watched the first episode and had high hopes for the show. I heart Nate. However, I have dvr'ed it and finally watched a few shows this weekend. The Dolly episode did make me weep like a sissy when she sang "I Will Always Love You" to the family that lost their mom at childbirth. And cheers to Nate for helping people in their time of need. But I wish he would have just one show a week with WAY better content. Let's take Oprah out of the loop and let Nate do his thing...design. He is good at it. [To end on a comic note...I must admit it was rather awkward when Dolly sang a bit of "Jolene" to the very same family! WTF? Poor song choice Dolly.]

Does your Art have a Story?

A lovely friend and past client Rachel Lando sent me a link to these wonderful spaces by Los Angeles designer Kim Alexandriuk in an interview with 1st dibs (Photography credits are on each image).

image

These two images (above and below especially) are so great for demonstrating beige undertones done just right! The sofa and roman shade (above) have a red undertone and the sofa and coffee table below have a green undertone.

image

Kim travels with her clients to find wonderful pieces for their homes. She says “It’s an adventure that is as much fun as it is invaluable to discover those rare and unique pieces not found in the galleries and showrooms back home. In addition good pieces from trips bring with them special memories of that place and time where they were found. So every time a client looks at them a feeling of the moment and fine experience accompanies that gaze”.

image

I find it so fascinating how furniture, accessories and art create a feeling when you look at them. Recently a friend bought me the most adorable little boudoir chair in wrought iron (pictures still to come). It’s wrought iron, old and peeling and could have been left that way but it wasn’t the right colour so I painted it black and still need to find a little piece of fabric to cover the seat. But every time I look at the chair in my bedroom I think about my friend Virginia and it makes me feel good.

image

With this new place I’m decorating I really want art that comes from somewhere more special than a big box store (so I’m worried that my walls will stay empty for too long) but I think it’s also true that we upgrade all our lives so sometimes it’s nice to have something pretty on the wall even if you don’t have a ‘story’ behind the purchase.

What’s the story behind your favourite piece?

A Bounty of Blue!

In my previous post, “Am I Blue” , I shared about missing some time with my favorite Blogger & Twitter friends, at an event in NYC.  They were heading to the Nate Berkus Show, but then the focus had become more about sharing fun times and connecting with one another.  That’s really the part I missed the most.  What mattered, in the end, was that everyone saw their “true blue” friends and made new connections, as well.  You could say it was a “Bounty of Blue” and I’ll share some links so you can read all about it!

Meanwhile, I’m wrapping up my Blue Week.  I’m really feeling “in the pink”, but that’s another color palette to be shared!

Highland

Highland Court fabrics show a bounty of blue, tipped in turquoise.  It’s one of my favorite lines to offer my clients!

What Makes You Happy?

I love this! I do think that each day you can make the choice to be happy or not. It ain't always easy but you CAN make the choice. And on those especially hard days, try to think of some things that make you happy. Today I will be thinking of.....

I cannot resist a Golden. I want one!

Interior Design

People that pay me to do interior design!

My favorite men.

The color blue.

The beach.

Listening to good music.

Being creatively stimulated.

Laughing out loud.

Retail Therapy.

An organized closet.

And here are a couple of things that have made me happy lately...

When my nephew Finn told me I should buy the house next door to my brother as we saw the current tenants moving out so that he could see me whenever he wanted. (Sweetheart) He also told me he thought it was "weird" that I wasn't married but I choose to ignore that comment.

When my nephews told me that I was their favorite aunt! (Nevermind the fact that I am their only aunt.)

When I found the perfect pair of knee-high grey suede boots, in my size AND on sale. (Score!)

Getting Mexican and margaritas with one of my best buds and seeing her face light up as she talked about her new man! (Yeah!!!)

Seeing my friends with their new babies....I had six friends have babies within about six weeks of each other. (Joy!)

What makes you happy???

Happy Friday Everyone...Choose Happiness today!
